The Just Arts Collective is rooted in the deep connections between spirituality and the arts. The desire to create art that celebrates our relationship with all that is sacred is as old as humankind. Art helps us remember the past, celebrate the present and live into the future with new visions for our lives and world.
Artists from many fields gather regularly to share our faith stories and understandings of spirituality and the arts. The Collective includes painters, writers, musicians, fiber artists, dancers, photographers, quilters, and actors. Everyone who is committed to creating inspirational art on peace and justice themes is welcome.
We will focus on telling the stories of historically marginalized communities, with a special emphasis on communities of color, people without homes, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersexed (LGBTQQI) and same gender loving people. Our goal is to invite people to share across differences and to be empowered to work together to create an inclusive, just and loving world. ?Through the combination of art and spirituality we will encourage people to follow Micah's call “to do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8) and Jesus' commandment to “love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10: 27-28a) Our art will encourage members of the Collective and people in the wider community to reflect on their lives and beliefs. We hope they will be inspired and transformed as they experience God's radical, inclusive, healing love and hear God's call to do justice in new ways. Then we trust they will act to create a world of peace and justice for everyone. We believe this process of reflection, inspiration, transformation and action has the potential to change individuals, local communities, our nation and the world.
